WHAT IS A TARGET AUDIENCE?

 

A target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed at. We can define target audience through six groups such as;

- GENDER 
  -ETHNIC GROUP

- AGE          
 - INTEREST

- CLASS     
  -USE OF GRATHICATIONS

 

WHY IS IT USEFUL FOR A FILM TO HAVE A TARGET AUDIENCE?

Target Audience allows the film producers to make suggestions and consumptions about there audience through the uses of stereotypes. Although stereotypes aren't always correct they usually apply to the vast majority of the audience resulting in the film being very successful. Stereotyping allows the producers to assume the audiences interests and add conventions what they think are more appealing in their film. For example action film 'Mad Max' by George miller is clearly aimed at the male audience between the ages of 16 - 35. 'Mad Max'  includes a large continuous amount of violent and explosive scene with use of weapons.

 

The social stereotype of males is that they are strong, dominant and courageous all these factors according to society make a male masculine. These stereotypes are just naturally associated to  violence and aggression all of which are presented in the film 'Mad max' and even some video games e.g ( GTA and Call of duty). The conventions of guns, blood and violence are what are expected to interest the male audience. Target audience is also  very helpful when deciding what conventions are to be included.

 

WHAT AUDIENCE DO YOU THINK GENRES APPEAL TO ?

 

ANIMATIONS-  Animations generally appeal to children of both gender within the ages of 1-12years and a strong interest in toys and board games with a stress free life. However  Conrad Vernon Director of 'The Sausage Party' recently challenged these perceptions with what is thought to have been  the very first adult animation movie to hit the cinema. The target audience for the sausage party is adults 18 - 30 years with no priority's e.g., ( children) , working class citizens  with an interest in comedy sketches and game shows.

 
 

SCIENCE FICTION- Si-fi  appeals to middle to upper class citizens, males between the ages 20- 45, holds a particular interest in world politics and enjoys reading lots of books.

 

FANTASY-  Appeals to a Female audience between ages 4-16, enjoys reading fictional books , Has a belief or religion ,comes from a middle class background .

Here is a copy of the survey which I conducted I collected information from a collection of unknown samples.
WHAT 3 GENRES DO AUDIENCES PREFER?
The genres that the samples from my survey preferred are Animation, Comedy and Action.
Comedy was  one of the most likeable genres majority of my samples said because 'it helps you escape the reality of problems of issues you may have for an 1h 30mins'  and  because; 'Its enjoyable to watch and as you sit in the cinema amongst others you don't know you can share a bond with them just from a joke in the movie'. As I was reading my results I noticed a similar pattern between the ages who picked this genre as a favourite, the age range was between 16-25 year old and both genders.

The samples that said they enjoyed animations were surprisingly between the ages of 9- 25years and were both males and females they said that they enjoyed animations because; 'there fun loving and enjoyable to watch and humorous' The samples that said they enjoy action were males of 25 years and upwards they said that they enjoyed action films because; 'There's always something to look forward to' and because ' they make you feel on edge'.

All the audience groups mentioned above liked the same film genres. Based on this information the genre I'd prefer to make would be animation because it attracts the widest range of audience and also would make the most money. For example it attracts bot genders and in order for children to watch films at the cinema they would need to be accompanied by a adult which would result in more than one ticket being bought and 25 year olds would also be buying tickets so even more money would be made.Overall the best genre to make would be animations.
