KYLE COOPER - WHAT MAKES A GOOD TITLE SEQUENCE?
Kyle Cooper is widely known for his groundbreaking trailer for 'Se7en'; and is accredited with 'the man who single handedly revitalised the title sequence as an art form'. The 1990's had been slacking as for title sequences just hadn't been up to the standard as they had been in previous years, although Cooper immediately changed that with his psychological thriller title sequence.
He believes there are three main requirements for making a good title sequence, including:
The sequence travels 'seamlessly into the film' making it a true representation of what may come.
It must 'set an expectation for the film' so the audience are aware of what it may entail.
The 'audience must be excited' and enthralled by the sequence enticing them to watch further.
Cooper discussed why the font was so significant to the film 'Seven'. He explains by it being 'handwritten' it was a way of the character 'scratching his emotion' as the 'type adds to the overall tone'.
'Deadzone' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' are two title sequences that Cooper has been inspired by. He iterates that he likes Deadzone for the simple typography and the music which sets the tone and atmosphere effectively. As for To Kill a Mocking Bird, he explains it encompasses obsession prevalent within the film and the typography is integrated rather than disassociated.
