Blogging health check 3

Overall I am unsatisfied with the results of the blogger health check as I have felt myself constantly working on the media project so to see to me be slightly under target is quite disheartening. I will try to achieve my targets by the end of this week to hopefully increase my mark.

Blogging Health Check 3

I can't say i'm happy about my grade so far but I know how to improve on it, there are things that I know I should have completed and that is my fault, but now hopefully, I can improve in time and get a good grade.
Overall, the making of the title sequence was very stressful and tiring but it came up with a great outcome, I would say I am very proud of our project, we had little fights but eventually overcame them and wouldn't have picked a better group that this one and along with this journey and found out how to edit and and use many technologies, also how to get great camera shots for the best results. To conclude, I feel like I learnt a lot this year and it may not come with the grade I wanted but i can say I have improved my knowledge and it was a great experience.

QUESTION 1 - IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

QUESTION 2 - HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

QUESTION 3 - WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?

Created using Visme. The Free Online Presentation Tool.

QUESTION 4 - WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?

This thinglink proves that 'Anna' enjoys watching not just one genre of film (as young children would not be interested in psychological thrillers), but does enjoy watching films at home as well as in the cinema. This is perfect for our film as it is independent, therefore there will be a limited amount of national screenings along with online releases including vimeo, googleplay, and itunes - meaning our audience can either go to the screening if thats what they enjoy, or can watch our film from the comfort of their own home.

In this thinglink below you can see a lot about Anna's personality. She is interested in the same things as our YouGov target audience including, the arts (e.g music), traveling, and trying new things.

Below you can see a facebook page for someone exactly of our target audience. 'Anna' is a 26 year old who shows an interest in films, books, and tv shoes of similar genre to ours. Looking at our YouGov profiles, she is the perfect example of our target audience.

Audience refers to the spectated guest watching, listening at a public event such as a film, play, concert or meeting.

Target audience refers to a particular group which a product is aimed at, for example our product was specifically aimed at young adults, we got this information from our YouGov research when we looked at the main audience for 'Black swan' and 'Donnie Darko'. Even though we gathered this information from YouGov we also conducted our own research and we have found that this genre is extremely popular with teenagers as when we conducted the public questionnaires and of general knowledge of being a teenager. However we still meet to the needs of the main target audience of young adults by adding a more mature thriller idea by adding a psychological aspect to it. The film opening we created isn't gender specific as it appeals to both. We expect both genders to be interested in this twisted plot and we intend to keep the audience drawn into the film name "Unbalance" as it indicates a question and curiosity about the film as to why a 'thriller' is named unbalance. We created a lot of suspense moments which kept the audience intrigued to watch on.

QUESTION 5 - HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?

QUESTION 6 - WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

OVERALL, I THINK THE OVERLAYS WE CREATED IN PREMIERE WAS THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY WE USED. THIS IS SINCE THE CLIPS WE HAD BEFORE USING THE OVERLAYS WE QUITE BASIC AND DIDN'T REALLY SAY A LOT ABOUT THE CHARACTER OR THE GENRE OF THE FILM. BUT BY PLACING TWO CLIPS OVER EACH OTHER AND CHANGING THE OPACITY - IT CREATED A WHOLE DIFFERENT TONE AND ATMOSPHERE WITHIN THE OPENING SEQUENCE. TECHNOLOGY IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE PRODUCTION STAGE OF ANY TITLE SEQUENCE. FROM MAKING SURE ALL THE CLIPS ARE IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, TO PLACING THE TITLES IN THE WRITE POSITION, TO MAKING SURE THE SOUND IS PLACED CORRECTLY. WITHOUT USING PREMIERE PRO OUR SEQUENCE WOULD NOT BE A SEQUENCE, IT WOULD'NT TELL A STORY OR EVOKE ANY EMOTION TO OR FROM THE AUDIENCE.

QUESTION 7 - LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK WHAT DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

BLOGGING HEALTH CHECK 3

OVERALL I AM PLEASED WITH MY FEEDBACK AS I HAVE BEEN ACHIEVING CONSISTENT GRADES. HOWEVER, NOW I KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO GAIN A LEVEL HIGHER.  BY POSTING MORE CAMTASIA'S OF THE EDITING PROCESS IT WILL GIVE A CLEAR INDICATION OF OUR LEARNING JOURNEY THROUGH THE EDITING STAGE. ALSO BY SHOWING THINGS WE DIDN'T INCLUDE DURING THE PITCH BUT DID INCLUDE IN THE FINAL PRODUCT WILL ENSURE THE BLOG IS TRUE DOCUMENTATION OF OUR PROCESS.
TRANSITIONING THE TITLES

When editing our opening sequence, the transitions for the titles were left until the end. This was since we knew exactly what we wanted them to look like and wanted everything in chronological order so they would flow seamless into the moving image. Our titles started with white typography on a black screen - this was since it was a very common feature of films of the same or similar genre. Whilst looking at other films titles, in particular we focused on 'Memento', we decided that we wanted quite minimalist transitions in order to make them flow into each other more effectively.

The gif above shows our final product for our titles. We achieved this affect on after effects, a software which we were all unfamiliar with. We started off by typing in the text we wanted and chose the font, we chose sans serif as it was popular in the genre of our choice. We then chose a fade in effect and placed it on top of the text and did the exact same for the fade out.
SIGNING OFF THE FINISHED VIDEO

GROUP 22 ARE FINISHED!

IT'S BEEN AN EXCITING (BUT STRESSFUL) PROCESS FILMING AND EDITING OUR SEQUENCE AND WE ARE VERY HAPPY AND PROUD TO BE FINISHED WITH THE PROCESS OF MAKING OUR OPENING SEQUENCE. OVERALL, WE HAVE ALL LEARNT A NUMBER OF SKILLS INCLUDING CAMERA WORK, EDITING SOFTWARE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY TEAMWORK. WE UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANISATION SKILLS AND HOW THEY REALLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON WHAT YOU AIM TO PRODUCE.
THE FINAL EDIT

IN OUR FINAL EDITING SESSION WE HAD TO PUT EVERYTHING INTO PLACE AND ENSURE A SEAMLESS SEQUENCE. AFTER FINALISING ALL THE CLIPS INTO THEIR CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, WE NEEDED TO IMPORT THE SOUND WE PLANNED ON USING. WE ACHIEVED THIS BY FINDING NO COPYRIGHTED MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS ON YOUTUBE AND PASTING THE URL INTO CLIP GRAB TO OBTAIN THE AUDIO. WE USED A TICKING NOISE TO ADD TO THE EFFECT OF THE ALARM CLOCK, ALONG WITH A DRONE THROUGHOUT THE SEQUENCE FOR THE INTENSITY. AFTER PLACING ALL THE SOUND EXACTLY WHERE WE WANTED, WE WATCHED THE SEQUENCE THOROUGHLY IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY ANY ANOMALIES. HERE IS A CAMTASIA OF THE PROCESS:

AFTER FEEDBACK FROM SOMEONE OF OUR TARGET AUDIENCE AGE RANGE, THEY SAID THERE SEEMS TO BE A SLIGHT INCONSISTENCY. THERE IS A TIME CHANGE TOWARDS THE END OF THE SEQUENCE WHERE IT DOESN'T REALLY MAKE SENSE AS THE PROTAGONIST APPEARS IN ONE LOCATION, THEN SUDDENLY ANOTHER. IN ORDER FOR THIS JUMP TO MAKE SENSE, WE ADDED A CROSS DISSOLVE BETWEEN THE TWO CLIPS AS THESE ARE TRADITIONALLY USED IN FILMS TO REPRESENT A CHANGE IN TIME.

Q2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Q4-Who would be the audience for your media product ?

Q4- WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?

Audience- The assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting.

Target audience-  A particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed.

Audience is extremely important because they helps you make decisions about what content and information you should included and how you should arrange it . Target audience also influences the tone and structure of your media . Without an audience  you don't have any one to look at your work so audience give you content a significance and a purpose whether that is to inform or educate them. It is also the audience that contributes to the success of your media helping you gain profit .

After gathering some information from BFI statistics I have collected information based on a very similar film to my own called “The Black Swan”  from this I have been able to piece together what kind of people would enjoy my opening sequence. As you can see below, there is a rough outline of this.

As you can see  the YouGov profile of Black swan confirms that the majority of audience members were women aged 25-39.  They tend to read magazines and newspapers and a popular pet for them is cats.We Conducted spoken survey were we asked random people between the age range of 25-31 particular questions based upon our survey. For addition research we did a public random survey. And from the research we know that the YouGov profiles are corrected and that our audience will be aimed at the following age.We also asked student the age of 16-18 if the had any particular interest in our film and the did. From this research we came  to conclusion of who are target audience would be and it was clear that both ages mentioned above would be in this .

An example of the audience for our film is Anna Wicks.Who matches all the information set in the YouGov site above.

As you can see from the information Anna wicks is within the age of 25-39 which makes her a perfect example of target audience. She also has a strong interest in thrillers and books of similar genre.

Q3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? - not finished

Evaluation/Question 6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I think the special effects we used in after effect were very useful and probably the most successful bit of our final edit, before it was pretty average and it didn't have any sort of impact on the audience. I felt like the effects almost portrayed the personality of the character and we did that in a very noticeable way.

Q5-How did you attract/address your audience?

Q6-What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

SWOT ANALYSIS

AFTER LOOKING OVER MY BLOG, HERE I HAVE COLLATED MY STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, THREATS AND OPPORTUNITIES I HAVE GATHERED FROM THIS BLOGGING PROCESS. IT HAS DEFINITELY MADE ME AWARE OF WHAT I AM AIMING FOR IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER MARK.

EVIDENCE AUDIT

OUR RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR PRODUCTS AND AUDIENCE

LOOKING BACK OVER MY PREVIOUS BLOG POSTS I CAN IDENTIFY THE RESEARCH AND INFORMATION I DISCOVERED ABOUT FILMS (IN PARTICULAR THE OPENING SEQUENCES) TO THE SIMILAR GENRE OF OURS. SOME OF THE RESEARCH THAT TOOK PLACE WAS INVOLVING TARGET AUDIENCE; AS A GROUP WE THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A VITAL PROCESS THAT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT FIRST AS WE NEED TO IDENTIFY WHAT THE AUDIENCE WOULD LIKE TO SEE AND WHO OUR AUDIENCE IS MOST LIKELY TO INCLUDE IN ORDER TO SUIT THEIR PREFERENCES AND APPEAL TO THEIR LIKING. IN THE BLOG POST TITLED ‘TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH’ WE VISITED YOUGOV TO FIND OUT INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROFILES OF PEOPLE WHO LIKED SIMILAR GENRES TO OURS, INCLUDING ‘BLACK SWAN’ AND ‘DONNIE DARKO’. OUR FINDINGS FROM THE ‘DONNIE DARKO’ PROFILE WAS VERY USEFUL TO US AS IT FALLS UNDER THE GENRE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER (THE SAME GENRE AS OURS); AND IT GAVE US THE AGE RANGE OF THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO LIKE THE FILM – 25-39. THIS MADE IT MORE CONVENIENT FOR US WHEN CARRYING OUT SOME PRIMARY AUDIENCE RESEARCH AS THERE WAS A SPECIFIC AGE BOUNDARY OF WHOM WE SHOULD ASK. MOVING ONTO THE MICRO AND MACRO ANALYSIS OF ‘DONNIE DARKO’ – THERE ARE SOME THINGS WHICH I IDENTIFIED AND WANTED TO COOPERATE INTO OUR OPENING SEQUENCE.  FOR EXAMPLE, THE EDIT ON THE TITLES WERE VERY SIMPLE AND MINIMALIST WITH A DISCREET FADE IN AND FADE OUT; THIS WAS SOMETHING I FELT WAS VERY EFFECTIVE AND WOULD HELP SET THE OVERALL TONE OF OUR OPENING SEQUENCE. WHILST ANALYSING ‘FIGHT CLUB’ I DID FURTHER RESEARCH INTO THE ORDER OF CREDITS AND THE REASON FOR THEM; WHILST MAKING AN INDEPENDENT FILM, THERE WOULD BE MORE PRODUCTION COMPANIES IN ORDER TO FUND THE FILM. ALSO THE TITLE OF THE FILM WOULD APPEAR BEFORE THE ACTORS AS THEY WOULD NOT BE WELL-KNOWN, MEANING THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SELL THE FILM BY THEIR NAME – THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING I’M GLAD WE RESEARCHED AS IT GAVE US AN INSIGHT INTO HOW OUR OPENING CREDITS SHOULD LOOK. OVERALL I’M CONTENT WITH THE AMOUNT OF RESEARCH WE CARRIED OUT HOWEVER I DO BELIEVE WE SHOULD’VE TAKEN SOME TIME INTO RESEARCHING A BIT MORE INTO IDENTS AND THE INSTITUTIONS. WHEN IT CAME TO PRODUCING OUR IDENT AND PLACING IT INTO OUR FILM OPENING, IT WAS A BIT RUSHED AS WE COULD’VE THOUGHT IT OUT A BIT MORE TO ACHIEVE AN IDENT SIMILAR TO OUR FILM GENRE.

ORGANISED USE OF ACTORS, LOCATIONS, PROPS AND COSTUME

ON THE BLOG YOU CAN SEE I CREATED A PADLET INCLUDING THE MAJORITY OF THE MISE EN SCENE IN WHICH WE WANTED TO INCLUDE. THIS PROPS WE INCLUDED CONSIST OF THE ALARM CLOCK, THE DIARY, AND THE MEDICATION. THESE WERE THE THREE MAIN PROPS WE WERE EAGER TO INCLUDE AS WE KNEW THEY WOULD BE SIGNIFICANT IN SETTING THE TONE AND GENRE OF OUR FILM IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE. THE COSTUMES WE THOUGHT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE INCLUDE THE SUIT AND THE TRAINERS FOR THE TWO PROTAGONISTS WHICH WE INCLUDED WITHIN THE FILM. HOWEVER, ORIGINALLY WE WANTED TO FILM IN A DOCTORS WAITING ROOM IN ORDER TO SET THE SCENE EVEN FURTHER FOR A GIRL DIAGNOSED WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA; HOWEVER, AFTER BEING DENIED ACCESS FROM TWO DOCTORS WE DECIDED AS A GROUP THAT WE COULD JUST ELIMINATE IT FROM OUR SEQUENCE. WITH BETTER ORGANISATION SKILLS WE MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCLUDE THE SCENE, SO THIS IS SOMETHING WE HAVE DEFINITELY LEARNT FROM AND WILL THINK ABOUT NEXT TIME.

WORK ON SHOT-LISTS, LAYOUTS, DRAFTING, SCRIPTING, OR STORYBOARDING

I BELIEVE THIS IS ONE AREA OF THE BLOG THAT SHOULD'VE BEEN GIVEN MORE ATTENTION IN THE PLANNING PROCESS. ON THE BLOG YOU CAN SEE A POST INCLUDING OUR STORYBOARDS WITH A DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN EACH SHOT, WITH SOME SHOT TYPES - HOWEVER THIS IS THE ONLY PIECE WE HAVE. IN OTHER POSTS WE HAVE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED CERTAIN SHOT TYPES WE WANTED TO INCLUDE BUT NOT AS A WHOLE. THIS WOULD'VE BEEN A SIGNIFICANT THING TO TALK ABOUT ON THE BLOG AS IT WOULD'VE MADE THE FILMING PROCESS RUN A BIT MORE SMOOTHLY AS WE WOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE DOING AND WHAT WE WANT THE OUTCOME TO BE. HAVING SAID THAT I DO BELIEVE THE CAMERA WORK WAS HANDLED VERY NICELY IN OUR GROUP AND WE DID ACHIEVE A NICE RANGE OF SHOTS; BUT NEXT TIME LOGGING THEM WOULD'VE BEEN THE BEST DECISION.

PRESENTATION OF IDEAS

OVERALL, I THINK THE BLOG IS LEGIBLE AND EASY TO READ AS EACH POST HAS A CLEAR TITLE. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE POSTS ARE NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. FOR EXAMPLE, OUR FEEDBACK FOR THE ROUGH CUT IS POSTED BEFORE THE ROUGH CUT ITSELF DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES; BUT I DEFINITELY BELIEVE WE NEED TO SWITCH SOME OF THE POSTS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO MAKE SENSE. WE HAVE ALL LABELED OUR POSTS MAKING IT EASY FOR THE EXAMINER TO SEE WHO HAS PRODUCED WHAT. THERE IS A RANGE OF DIFFERENT MEDIAS USED ON THIS BLOG INCLUDING EMAZE, PREZI, CAMTASIA, SOUNDCLOUD ETC. THIS TESTED OUR SKILLS EVEN FURTHER AS WE WERE CONSTANTLY LEARNING HOW TO USE NEW SOFTWARES EFFECTIVELY.
